Bellator Fighting Championships' wild fifth season continued as the ratings for Saturday's Bellator 53 broadcast plunged from the second-highest in company history to the worst showing of the promotion's partnership with MTV-2. According to reports from MMA Junkie, the weekend event drew just 103,000 viewers, down from the 269,000 of Bellator 52.

When the numbers seem erratic, the fact stands that the broadcast was once again directly competing with college football and a wildly popular UFC pay-per-view (UFC 136). Thus, it is telling that a 1:00 a.m. ET/PT replay of the event actually outdrew the live version, somehow garnering 120,000 viewers.

Bellator 53 was held on October 8th at the Buffalo Run Casino in Miami, Oklahoma, and headlined by a pair of semifinal matchups for the season five welterweight tournament.

Lost amongst the splendor of UFC 136 was the fact that Bellator Fighting Championships had yet another spectacular show on Saturday night. Incredibly, eight of the nine bouts that lined Bellator 53 ended before reaching the judges' hands. Yet somehow Douglas Lima's brutal knockout of Chris Lozano out-shined them all.

Channeling his inner Frankie Edgar, the 23-year-old Brazilian prospect recovered from a harrowing first round to put Lozano to sleep with a right-hand-from-hell midway through the second. With the victory, "The Phenom" sent a message to all comers in the 170-pound division, while punching his ticket to the Bellator season-five welterweight tournament finals, where he will meet UFC-veteran Ben "Killa B" Saunders for the next shot at the promotion's welterweight champion, Lyman Good.

At the time of this writing, no date has been set for the match-up.

Ben Saunders (12-3-2) had no idea where his fight with Luis Santos (50-7-1) would go, but when the time came, he was ready for everything. Irrespective of a reputation built on some of the welterweight division's fiercest striking, the 28-year-old UFC veteran put on a grappling clinic at the main event of Bellator 53, working Santos all across the mat before locking in a ferocious keylock in the opening minutes of the first round to pave his way into the Bellator welterweight tournament finals. Though he was on his back for most of the night, Saunders threatened countless times with a stifling grappling onslaught, transitioning from submission to submission with relative ease, before coaxing a tap in the final segment for his fourth straight win since being released by Zuffa.

Not satisfied to rest on his own laurels, Douglas Lima (20-4) flipped the switch in the opposite direction, smashing Chris Lozano (9-2) from consciousness three minutes into the second frame of the night's co-headlining bout. Despite being known as a submission specialist, the 23-year-old prospect recovered from a crumpling right hook in the opening minutes to respond with a devastating stand-up assault, capped by the powerful right hand combination that put his opponent to sleep. The win was the eighth in a row for "The Phenom," who is now set to face Saunders in the tournament finals.

Also featured on the night, Brazilian heavyweight Thiago Santos (9-1) effortlessly dispatched Josh Burns (6-5) via rear-naked choke for his third straight victory. With the win, the 6'3" 260-pound Santos has been tabbed as a replacement should Mike Hayes' medical suspension result in a disqualification from Bellator's heavyweight tournament semi-finals.

Official weigh-ins for Bellator 53 were held Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. ET / 12 p.m. PT at the Buffalo Run Casino in Miami, Oklahoma. All fighters on the main card met their required weight, including each of the four welterweight tournament semifinalists -- Ben Saunders (170.5), Luis Santos (170.5), Chris Lozano (170.5), and Douglas Lima (169.75). Their scheduled tournament bouts are now rendered official after the results of the weigh-ins.

Headliners Saunders and Santos showed ample amounts of respect towards each other as they squared off. "He's a great fighter and I'm expecting a good fight," Santos said after tipping the scales. "I'm ready for him." Afterwards Saunders echoed the sentiment, declaring, "I respect him tremendously. We're going to put on a great show and hopefully give the fans what they want -- a bloody war."

Undercard participant Greg Scott failed to meet his required weight, tipping the scales at 160.5 pounds for his 157-pound catchweight bout with Emanuel Brooks.
Just two days away from Bellator 53, promotion officials have added a last-minute heavyweight bout to the main card. According to reports from MMA Junkie, Brazilian prospect Thiago Santos (8-1) is slated to face-off against Josh Burns (6-4) in a tourney-reserve bout for Bellator's season five heavyweight tournament.

The winner will receive the spot potentially vacated by Mike Hayes, who incurred a lengthy medical suspension as a result of a hand injury suffered in his headlining bout against Neil Grove at Bellator 52. Hayes' status is up in the air at the moment, however a decision is forthcoming. The tournament semifinals are scheduled for October 29th at Bellator 56.

With the news, Santos is granted an opportunity to reenter into the heavyweight festivities after being pulled from the tournament due to visa issues. "The issues with the visa are over," he explained. "I'm here now, and just ready to try to get back into this tournament and get a shot at the title."

Known as "Big Monster," the 6'3", 260-pound Santos has won two straight fights, including a three-minute smashing of Geronimo dos Santos at Amazon Fight 3. He now faces Burns, a Hammer House representative who was denied entry into the tournament after losing via TKO to Eric Prindle in April.

Due to the shifting of the match-ups, a middleweight contest between Giva Santata and Darryl Cobb has been relegated to the undercard, however Bellator officials maintain it will be the first televised bout if the MTV-2 main card ends early. Bellator 53 will be held on October 8th at the Buffalo Run Casino in Miami, Oklahoma.

Brazilian middleweight submission specialist Giva Santana has signed with Bellator Fighting Championships.

In keeping with the promotion's ongoing efforts to fill its rosters with the elite up-and-coming talent, Bellator Fighting Championships have signed Brazilian submission ace Giva Santana (16-1) to their middleweight division.

Ominously known as "The Arm Collector," Santana is a third-degree Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and two-time Pan American Jiu-Jitsu Champion, training out of Team Oyama in Irvine, California. He has racked up a near perfect 16-1 record throughout his seven-year career while showing a penchant for stunning first-round finishes. 15 of his 16 victories have ended before the final bell, including a ridiculous streak of 10 straight armbar finishes stretching from 2005 to 2008.

"A lot of fighters like to go out there and try to knock their opponents out as soon as they can, and that's the same way I am with my submissions," Santana said in a statement released by Bellator. "For me, to tap a guy out is the same feeling as the knockout. When a punch lands and you know you knocked your opponent out, I feel the same feeling when I lock up a submission on my opponent. I know right away that he's going to tap, and it's a great feeling."

Santana last fought against former-WEC champion Doug Marshall at Tachi Palace Fights 10, winning by rear-naked choke just 29 seconds into the first round.

He will join a Bellator middleweight division that includes current champion Hector Lombard and season two tournament winner Alexander Shlemenko. The newly-signed prospect will not be a participant in season five's upcoming tournament, but should see action before the end of the year.
