In the lead-up to ONE FC's inaugural show, dubbed ONE Fighting Championship: Champion vs. Champion, many within the eastern press considered the debut to be "the biggest event in Asian mixed martial arts history." Needless to say, it didn't disappoint.
Held on September 3rd at Singapore Indoor Stadium, in Kallang, Singapore, the excit-packed card was broadcasted in over 24 Asian countries and featured a lineup of ten fights.
Those watching the action saw Filipino lightweight prospect Eduard Folayang earn a close decision win over South Korean kickboxer A Sol Kwon in the night's main event. The victory was the fifth in a row for the 26-year-old, who was performing in Kallang for the first time in his career. After the show both fighters were awarded an extra $5,000 bonus for "Fight of the Night."
On the card's co-headlining bout, UFC veterans Yoshiyuki Yoshida and Phil Baroni battled for fifteen grueling minutes before the Japanese judoka could claim victory on the judge's scorecards. The loss was Baroni's fourth of his last five matches, but the first for the 35-year-old outside of the United States since 2006.
Also featured on the night, Eric Kelly defeated Mitch Chilson via rear-naked choke midway through the first round of their furious featherweight contest. Kelly earned a "Submission of the Night" bonus for his performance.
