The already embattled Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix took another hit late Monday night. Tournament finalist Daniel Cormier confirmed suspicions that his right hand was broken in the opening minutes of a semifinal bout with Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva on Saturday. Cormier announced the news via this tweet:
Just got done seeing Dr. Hand is broken will be on the shelf 4 a while. Still looking forward to finishing tourney. Thx 4 support. DC
Cormier first mentioned the injury in the immediate aftermath of the bout, explaining to Showtime announcer Mauro Ranallo that he "jacked" his hand on the first punch he landed.
According to USA Today reporter Sergio Non, the former Olympian will sit out six to eight weeks before resuming training, per his Zinkin Entertainment management team. Though, oddly, Cormier was absent from the Ohio Athletic Commission's list of official medical suspensions.
Strikeforce has yet to comment on the situation or confirm a date for the Heavyweight Grand Prix Finals. Given the situation, it's likely that a date within the first quarter of 2012 would be the most viable option if the company wishes to include Cormier into the equation.
