Paulo Thiago used his considerable judo acumen to keep putting David Mitchell on the ground at UFC 134. The home town Rio de Janeiro crowd went crazy for their countryman as he welcomed Spike TV viewers to UFC: Rio. Thiago landed hard bombs standing and hurt Mitchell repeatedly.
Thiago visibily slowed in the third round but had enough left to take that round on every judges' card for the clean 30-27 sweep. Thiago used a variety of trips, throws and take downs to continually put Mitchell on his backside throughout the fight. Standing, Mitchell had nothing to answer the hard right handed bombs Thiago continually poured on.
Both men ended the fight bloodied but unbowed but there was little doubt that Thiago had a decision coming after the third round was completed. He thoroughly outclassed Mitchell and should return to the contender level in the welterweight division.
