Brandon Rios is in a bit position tomorrow night as he sits in the featured undercard bout against John Murray on the HBO PPV card for the rematch between Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito. Unfortunately, some old maturity issues and some legitimate concerns that Rios is not a lightweight anymore reared their ugly heads.
Rios missed weight on his first attempt, having the weights announced three different ways the first time around but all over the 135 pound lightweight limit. After an hour to try to shed the weight, Rios simply could not make it, hitting the scales at 136.6 pounds, a full 1.6 pounds over the limit for a title fight. The bout with Murray is now a title fight for John only as Rios will not have the title anymore once the bout ends. Murray will either win it, or it will become vacant.
This only goes to prove that it's time for Rios to move up in weight. Junior Welterweight and Welterweight present some interesting options for his future, but he looked awful on the scales trying to suck himself dry to get to 135 and it's likely not physically safe for him to try to do it anymore.
John Murray still has to accept the bout, but it's likely he will with the possibility of a title and good money on the line. Should the fight get scrapped, we'll bring you an update as quickly as possible.
Update: The fight is a go:
