Last night in Moline, Illinois at the iWireless Center, the newly-revamped ProElite held their second event, title 'Big Guns', with former UFC heavyweight champions Andrei Arlovski and Tim Sylvia both appear on the card and looking for redemption. The event aired live on HD Net.
Sherdog has a photo gallery in their write-up, but their post-fight analysis encapsulates the general sentiment in the MMA community following the fight: "In mixed martial arts, effective is not always synonymous with exciting."
Arlovski managed to put away heavyweight journeyman Travis Fulton, but wasn't able to do so until - quite literally - the second to last moment in the third round.
Sylvia, too, eeked out a win, but spent much of the fight pressing opponent Andreas Kraniotakes into the fence, chipping away with cage control and minor damage points.
One week removed from B.J. Penn's loss to Nick Diaz, Penn's brother Reagan Penn also lost a MMA bout. Penn, a jiu-jitsu black belt, showed significant cardiovascular fitness issues, allowing the unheralded Evan Cutts to control the entire fight.
2009 NCAA Division I national champion Mark Ellis was surprisingly upset by Ryan Martinez. Ellis spent much of the bout on the outside circling, looking for a spot to open. But he was never fully able to make use of his wrestling skills and was slowly picked apart or had his offense entirely stuffed.
A gif of Arlovski's TKO:
Bloody Elbow's Matt Roth described the event as something akin to pure boredom. ProElite promoter T.J. Thompson didn't necessarily disagree.
