Former UFC middleweight Maiquel Falcao has reportedly suffered a heart attack while training in his native Brazil. According to reports from Tatame, the 30-year-old has been hospitalized at Santa Casa da Misericordia of Pelotas, in Rio Grande do Sul.
"Maiquel is still on the Intensive Care Unit and might stay there for few more days, when he'll go through a catheterization," said his manager, Marcelo Brigadeiro. "He's lucid and improving fast."
Falcao (28-4, 1 NC) recently inked an exclusive contract with Bellator Fighting Championships and was targeting entry into the promotion's season-six middleweight tournament. Prior to signing, the Brazilian knockout artist fought just one in the UFC, at UFC 123, where he defeated Gerald Harris via unanimous decision.
Following the match, Falcao was slated to face "The Ultimate Fighter" veteran Tom Lawlor at UFC 134 in Rio de Janeiro, but was abruptly released due to fallout from a 2002 assault charge. He has since collected a 2-1 record within regional promotions.
