Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic (27-10-2, 1 NC) has officially hung up his gloves. The legendary Croatian heavyweight announced his retirement following a TKO loss to Roy Nelson at UFC 137 in Las Vegas.
"I knew before this fight this was going to be my farewell fight," Filipovic emotionally said. "Unfortunately, I didn't make it. I wanted to say goodbye with a victory, but Roy was better tonight. I want to thank all you guys, especially the UFC fans. I was treated like a king."
While a loss isn't the way Filipovic hoped to ride into the sunset, fans were still able to catch a brief glimpse of the "Cro Cop" of old on Saturday night. Midway through the second round the 37-year-old trapped "Big Country" against the cage and exploded with a ruthless barrage of punches that forced his opponent to hold on and hope for the best. Afterwards a bloodied Nelson was up-front with his adoration.
"It was awesome to compete with a legend," Nelson said. "He's given us in MMA, as a fighter, as a fan, so much."
